ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether PSA fluctuation can be used to predict the risk of prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 1244 patients who underwent prostate biopsy at Kartal Dr. Lutfi Kirdar City Hospital between 2013 and 2021 (848 in non-cancer; 396 in cancer). The patient's age, last two PSA values (PSA1 and PSA2) within three months before the biopsy, the duration between two PSAs (days), prostate size (g) and PSA density (PSAD) were all recorded. PSA fluctuation rate (PSAfr) was defined as the change rate between two PSA values. RESULTS: PSAfr was significantly higher in the non-cancer group than in the prostate cancer group (15.2% (20.5) and 9.6% (14.4), P=.019). A Simple linear regression was used to examine the relationship between PSAfr and other factors such as age, PSA, PSAD, and prostate volume, but it was shown that these had no effect on PSA fluctuations. ROC analysis revealed a relatively low Area Under the Curve (AUC) for PSAfr (AUC, 0.584 (0.515-0.653)). However, the cut-off value of 12.35% was found to be significant, with a sensitivity of 58% and a specificity of 59% (P:.019, 95%CI). The odds ratio, adjusted for age, PSAD, and PSA2, was calculated as 0.545 (0.33-0.89) using logistic regression analysis to show the relationship between prostate cancer and PSAfr. As a result, those with high PSAfr were found to be 1.83 times less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than those with low fluctuations. CONCLUSION: PSAfr could be used in nomograms to predict prostate cancer risk and reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In order to better understand the ossification processes in anurans our study was carried out on tadpoles and adults of Lithobates catesbeianus. In this sense, we characterized the kinetic properties of alkaline phosphatase with p-nitrophenylphosphatase (pNPP) and pyrophosphate (PPi) and evaluated the activities of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase and acid phosphatase. The enzyme extracts were obtained from tadpoles and adult femurs, which were divided into epiphysis and diaphysis. After homogenization, the samples were submitted to differential centrifugation to obtain cell membranes and, further, to phospholipase C (PIPLC) treatment, to remove membrane-bound proteins anchored by phosphatidylinositol. The average of specific activity for pNPP hydrolysis (at pH 10.5) by alkaline phosphatase released by phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PIPLC) from Bacillus cereus among different bone regions at different animal ages was 1,142.57 U.mg-1, while for PPi hydrolysis (at pH 8.0), it was 1,433.82 U.mg-1. Among the compounds tested for enzymatic activity, the one that influenced the most was EDTA, with approximately 67% of inhibition for pNPPase activity and 77% for PPase activity. In the case of kinetic parameters, the enzyme showed a "Michaelian" behavior for pNPP and PPi hydrolysis. The Km value was around 0.6mM for pNPPase activity and ranged from 0.01 to 0.11mM for PPase activity, indicating that the enzyme has a higher affinity for this substrate. The study of pNPP and PPi hydrolysis by the enzyme revealed that the optimum pH of actuation for pNPP was 10.5, while for PPi, which is considered the true substrate of alkaline phosphatase, was 8.0, close to the physiological value. The results show that regardless of the ossification type that occurs, the same enzyme or isoenzymes act on the different bone regions and different life stages of anurans. The similarity of the results of studies with other vertebrates shows that anurans can be considered excellent animal models for the study of biological calcification.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Human semen analysis must be performed after the liquefaction of the ejaculate. This takes place about 30min after ejaculation and samples must be maintained in the lab during this time. The temperatures for this incubation and the final analysis of motility are crucial but seldom taken into account. This study aims to examine the effect of these temperatures on various sperm parameters both manually (sperm count, motility, morphology, viability, chromatin condensation and maturation and DNA fragmentation) and CASA (kinematics and morphometrics, using an ISAS®v1 CASA-Mot and CASA-Morph systems, respectively) analyzed. Methods: Seminal samples from thirteen donors were incubated for 10min at 37°C followed by additional 20min at either room temperature (RT, 23°C) or 37°C and then examined following WHO 2010 criteria. Results: The data obtained show that there were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the subjective sperm quality parameters with incubation temperature. On the other hand, the head sperm morphometric parameters were significantly higher after room temperature incubation showing, in addition, lower ellipticity (P<0.05). Furthermore, kinematic parameters were evaluated both at RT and 37°C for the two incubation temperatures. In general, the four temperature combinations showed that kinematic parameters followed this order: RT-RT Conclusions: Our results showed that temperature control during both incubation and analysis is needed for accurate semen analysis, recommending the use of 37°C during the entire process. ABSTRACT

The biodegradation of polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 400 - PEG 400 was evaluated with the consortium Pseudomonas sp. and Rhizobium trifolii in Batch reactors. To determine the optimal operating conditions of the reactor, a medium with minimum essential salts supplemented with CSMEP peptone was prepared; In these media, the behavior of the consortium was estimated with temperature conditions between 15-37°C, pH in a range of 5-9 and PEG 400 concentration of .1-2%. With the results obtained in these previous tests, three Batch - BK reactors were assembled. 14 samples of the contents of each one of the reactors were analyzed during 20 days to measure the biodegradation of PEG 400 using chemical oxygen demand - COD in a closed digestion system. A decrease of up to 98.5% of the polyether was obtained, which showed that the symbiosis was effective to achieve an important removal of the contaminant.

ABSTRACT

Background: Brewer ́s spent grain (BSG) is a biomass by-product generated in large volumes during industrial beer production. BSG has become a growing environmental problem, as most breweries discard it inappropriately, negatively impacting the environment. Alternatives for the exploitation of this by-product have consisted of elaborating food supplements for farm animals, obtaining biofuels, developing adsorbents, and obtaining substances for the food industry. However, the high moisture content in BSG (approximately 70%), poses a significant challenge in exploring various reuse alternatives. Therefore, the implementation of a pre-drying process becomes essential. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the BSG drying kinetics at different temperatures and the effect of the drying temperature on the physical properties and the content of bioactive compounds. Methods: BSG samples were dried at different temperatures (50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 105°C) and analyzed for their moisture ratio, water activity, total polyphenol content (TPC), and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) radical scavenging activity. Also, four kinetics models were fitted to the drying data. Results:It was determined that the effective diffusivity was between 5.23x10

ABSTRACT

Abstract Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. It has a variable clinical course, with alternating periods of disease activity and remission. Because the incidence and prevalence of Crohn's disease have been increasing, evaluation by imaging methods has become more important. The most widely used methods are computed tomography enterography, magnetic resonance enterography (as an elective examination), and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (in the context of emergency). Computed tomography enterography and magnetic resonance enterography are useful for diagnosis, follow-up, evaluation of complications, and prognosis. Both can be used in order to evaluate the small bowel loops and the associated mesenteric findings, as well as to evaluate other abdominal organs. They both also can detect signs of disease activity, fibrosis, penetrating disease, and complications. The interpretation of such changes is essential to the multidisciplinary approach, as is the standardization of the nomenclature employed in the reports. In this paper, we review and illustrate the imaging findings of Crohn's disease, using the standardized nomenclature proposed in the multidisciplinary consensus statement issued by the Society of Abdominal Radiology, the Society of Pediatric Radiology, and the American Gastroenterology Association, with recommendations for descriptions, interpretations, and impressions related to those findings.

ABSTRACT

This project aims the development of copper, manganese, zinc, cobalt, nickel and iron metal complexes with L-amino acids aspartic and glutamic acids for application as foliar fertilizers and elucidation of the probable incorporation/absorption mechanism by plants. As a work plan, it was intended to produce these metal complexes with complexing agents that provide specific characteristics: high thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities when compared to the corresponding EDTA chelates; high solubility; compatibility with herbicides and fungicides and high stability against pH variations. With the development of such coordination compounds, some parameters considered indispensable to quality assurance were then evaluated, in comparison to that of currently available commercial EDTA chelates. To evaluate the performance of the obtained compounds, two foliar applications in the same crop were carried out. Further, the content of each nutrient after the production period and the productive capacity were evaluated, aiming to elucidate the absorption mechanism of the plant. As a result, elaborated products with high added technology were obtained, capable of ameliorating the nutritional benefits, that can support an eco-friendly portfolio

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to propose a bicompartmental nonlinear model and to identify the best-performing model between the proposed model and the bicompartmental logistic (BL) mode regarding the quality of fit to the curve of cumulative gas production (CGP) using corn silage, sunflower, and their mixtures. Gas production was measured 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 19, 24, 30, 36, 48, 72, and 96 h after beginning the in vitro fermentation process. The generated data were used to generate the parameters of each model tested using the stats package of the R computational tool version 4.0.4. The mathematical models were subjected to the following selection criteria: the adjusted coefficient of determination (Raj.), residual mean square (RMS), mean absolute deviation (MAD), and Akaike information criterion (AIC). It was demonstrated that the proposed model had better performance with a high Raj., and lower values of RMS, AIC, and MAD than the bicompartmental logistic model for the prediction of the parameters of cumulative gas production (CGP), per to present a superior fit in the set of criteria according to the methodology and conditions in which the present study was developed.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Muscle strength is directly related to its cross-sectional area and the volume of its fibers, but there is no absolute linear relationship between hypertrophy and improvement in athletic performance. Under this complex perspective, muscle training strategies have been implemented to promote relevant muscle strength and improve overall athletic ability. Objective: Explore the impacts of muscle strength training on young athletes based on sport kinetic principles. Methods: we adopted the method of intragroup statistical comparison with body indexes of 10 volunteers undergoing muscle training focused on the core and lower limb set. Results: Muscle strength gain was effectively verified via electromyogram, and the test of athletic skills showed an evolution in jumping, balance, and reduction of wrong passes. Conclusion: Evidence-based muscle training can increase muscle strength and promote sports skill gain in young athletes. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment results.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: to investigate and correlate the kinetics and kinematics of the starting block in swimming of visually impaired and visually impaired athletes. Methods: The method used was to compare performance parameters between swimmers of both sexes. The sample had 16 swimmers being 4 blind, 2 low vision and, 10 normovisuals. Inferential analysis with Shapiro-Wilk test, inferential statistics T-test, and for correlation between variables the Pearson's test, with a significance level of 5%. We correlated the dynamometric variable, in the phases of block time, time in 5 meters and time in 16 meters. Results: Resulting in significant differences of (0.030, 0.029, and 0.001, block time, 5 and 16 meters respectively) lower for the normovisual swimmers. In the kinetic variable, the peak force resulting from normal-vision swimmers was significantly higher (0.024). The departure angle of normal-vision swimmers was also significantly higher (0.030). In the phases of reaction time, flight time, horizontal and vertical force, entry angle and flight distance, there were no significant differences. An expressive correlation was observed between the variables block time and time in 5 meters (0.688); block time and time on 16 meters (0.689); time on 5 meters and time on 16 meters (0.928); and flight time and departure angle (0.941). The force peak showed a significant correlation in most of the variables under study except for the reaction time and the imput angle. Conclusion: the absence of vision leads to a lack of performance and results in high-performance swimming tests.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Semen analysis is a clinical method aimed at determining the fertility of a male individual. The traditional subjective method lacks the reliability that can be achieved by computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) technology. Unfortunately, this technology has only been used when taking into consideration individually different sperm characteristics. The aim of this work is to present an integrative mathematical approach that considers different seminal variables to establish human sperm subpopulations. Methods: Samples were obtained from thirteen volunteers via masturbation and were analyzed by the routine subjective method and two objective systems, CASA Motility (CASA-Mot) and CASA Morphology (CASA-Morph). Results: Seminogram variables were reduced to three principal components (PC) showing two subpopulations. Kinematics and morphometric variables each rendered three PCs for four subpopulations. Conclusions: These results lay the foundations for future studies including different geographical, social, ethnic and age range conditions with the aim of achieving a definitive view of the human semen picture. ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To evaluate cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, using cine phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (cine-PC MRI), in healthy pediatric subjects, determining the normal flow values in this population, as well as identifying differences related to age, sex, and body surface area. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study involving 32 healthy children and adolescents, in whom the flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the cerebral aqueduct was evaluated quantitatively with cine-PC MRI. We used specialized software to analyze the images obtained with cine-PC MRI, drawing a region of interest on the aqueduct. A flow-time curve was obtained, as were automated measurements of the various parameters. Results: The following normal (mean) values were obtained: net flow, 1.10 ± 0.99 mL/m; stroke volume, 12.2 ± 10.1 μL/cycle; mean velocity, 0.72 ± 1.00 cm/s; peak systolic velocity, 5.28 ± 2.30 cm/s; peak diastolic velocity, 4.51 ± 1.77 cm/s. These values were not affected by age or sex. In addition, body surface area was not found to correlate significantly with mean velocity or stroke volume. Conclusion: In children and adolescents, the basic cerebrospinal fluid flow parameters, as determined by cine-PC MRI, appear to be independent of age and sex.

ABSTRACT

The gait patter in childhood is constantly changing as a result of the neuro-anatomical maturation due to growth, for this reason we propose to identify from published studies and the motion capture method, the essential features for obtaining the biomechanical pattern of gait in children. A search for scientific articles was carried out in Scopus, SciELO, PudMed and PEDro where gait is evaluated in subjects under 18 years old, based on motion capture methods and biomechanical parameters. The results showed that from 7 to 9 years old the child acquires the definitive gait pattern, the most used motion capture method was Vicon, with the use of video, force platform and electromyography and the parameters used were the spatial, temporal, spatial–temporal, kinematic, kinetic and electromyographic.(AU)
